Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
Silver Lake queer neighborhood bar with a dancey back room and DJs.
Akbar is a Silver Lake neighborhood bar near Sunset Junction, open since the last night of 1996 and still run as the unpretentious "neighborhood oasis" it bills itself as. Founders Scott Craig and Peter Alexander handed it to longtime managers Albert Loya and David LeBarron after 27 years, and the character carried over: a dim, lounge-style front room for talking and drinking, and a back bar with a small dance floor that opens up at night. The crowd is genuinely mixed, queer, straight, artists, eastside regulars, and the programming runs to DJs, comedy, and themed nights rather than big-club spectacle. It's an anchor of gay nightlife on the eastside, a counterweight to the WeHo strip for people who'd rather dance somewhere that still feels like a bar.
