Alteregos sits on Gottingen Street in Halifax's North End, the city's historic queer corridor where Pride marches began and venues like Menz Bar have anchored LGBTQ+ nightlife for decades. Attached to Halifax Backpackers Hostel, the cafe draws a genuine mix of travelers, neighborhood regulars, and students. The menu runs from jerk chicken (get there before it sells out) and samosas with coriander chutney to baked French toast with maple syrup, plus London Fogs and matcha lattes. Local art lines the walls, there's an outdoor patio, and a liquor license for when the evening runs long. Over the years Alteregos has hosted poetry readings, reggae nights, and queer programming. It's six doors from Backlot HFX, the queer nightlife venue that opened on Gottingen in early 2026.
