Halifax, Nova Scotia
Halifax's first vegan butcher and eatery on Gottingen Street.
Real Fake Meats is Halifax's first vegan butcher shop and eatery, on Gottingen Street in the North End. Co-owner and chef Lauren Marshall — a graduate of the Culinary Institute of Canada and Top Chef Canada Season 4 alumna — makes all the plant-based meats and cheeses from scratch in-house: fakon (seitan bacon), cashew cream cheese fermented with rejuvelac, and plant-based turkey slices. The rotating menu builds those into burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, donairs, poutines, mac and cheese, and grilled cheese with tomato soup. Listed on Discover Halifax's directory of 2SLGBTQIA+ owned businesses and featured in Halifax Pride's queer dining highlights. The storefront opened in January 2019 after a community-funded crowdfunding campaign. Six seats for dine-in, plus takeout and delivery. The menu rotates every two weeks.
