Barcelona, Barcelona
LGBTQ+ bookshop with queer theory, erotica, and zines in Gaixample.
Antinous is one of Barcelona's enduring queer institutions, a bookstore and café founded in 1997 to put LGBTQ+ literature and culture into open circulation in the city. After nearly two decades in its original spot, it moved to Carrer de Casanova 72, in the heart of the Gaixample, the gay-centered pocket of the Eixample where much of Barcelona's queer nightlife and retail sits. The shelves run from queer theory and history to fiction, erotica, magazines, and DVDs, in Catalan and Spanish with a section of English-language titles for visitors. It doubles as a small café and a venue for readings and book signings, which has made it a genuine community hub rather than just a place to buy a paperback. For a traveler, it's an easy daytime counterpoint to the Gaixample's bars: a quiet, literary room where you can pick up something you won't find in the airport bookshop and get a local's read on what's worth your time.
