Cult kitschy dive bar with church-meets-nightclub aesthetic
La Chapelle is a cult-favorite cocktail bar on Carrer de Muntaner in the Gaixample, instantly recognizable for its church-meets-cabaret decor: white-tiled walls hung with crucifixes, Virgin Mary statues, and Jesus-themed kitsch, all played for camp rather than reverence. It's tiny, it's been here for decades, and it keeps one of the better terraces in the neighborhood for people-watching at the start of a night. The pace is relaxed and the crowd skews a bit older — comfortably 30s to 50s — which makes it a real place to talk before the clubs pick up. Drinks are reasonable, and it doubles as a pre-party anchor: regulars warm up here before moving on to the bigger venues nearby. For a traveler, it's the most characterful low-key bar in the Gaixample and an easy place to begin the evening.
