Tamika Heard’s downtown bakery and café on South Second Street. Heard grew up in her family’s business, Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, and describes herself as a proud daughter of Memphis’ cookie royalty — the cookies are still the thing to order, usually on a three-for-five-dollars special. Quiche and café fare round out the menu. It is Black-owned and woman-owned, and listed in the Black Chamber of Memphis business directory.
