Kitsch basement gay bar with disco classics on Wardour Street
Tucked down Tisbury Court, the alley off Wardour Street, Friendly Society hides behind an unmarked doorway and a flight of stairs into one of Soho's last great pieces of camp. The basement decor is deliberate kitsch: Barbie dolls strung from the ceiling, mirror balls, a fishbowl in the middle of the room, and old movies flickering on the back wall. The owner tends to greet people herself, which sets the tone — this is a bar that knows its regulars. The crowd is broad and mixed, gay in the widest sense, and the music leans disco and classic dance. In a Soho that has lost gay venue after gay venue, Friendly Society has held on as an unpretentious, low-key anchor — the kind of place you duck into to actually hear each other talk and then end up staying all night. Easy to miss from the street, which is part of why the people who know it stay loyal.
