Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
One of WeHo's longest-running dive bars, cash-friendly and old-school.
Mother Lode is a no-frills neighborhood gay bar on Santa Monica Boulevard and one of the oldest in West Hollywood, open in some form since 1979. A pool table sits in the middle of the room and two small patios face the boulevard for smoking and people-watching. After a recent refresh it kept the same laid-back, unpretentious character that has always set it apart from the strip's bigger clubs. This is the casual end of WeHo nightlife: strong pours, a friendly bartender-to-regular rapport, and a crowd that mixes longtime locals with visitors. Worth a stop if you want conversation over a dance floor, or a relaxed first drink before the louder rooms nearby. Sundays bring a long-running beer bust and Thursdays lean into karaoke.
