The Phoenix has been New Orleans' leather and bear stronghold since 1983, set at 941 Elysian Fields in Faubourg Marigny, just downriver from the French Quarter. The ground floor is a no-frills neighborhood bar—pool table, strong drinks, come-as-you-are—while the upstairs Eagle leans dark and cruisy. It's the home base for much of the city's leather and Levi world, hosting groups like the Lords of Leather and the Cavaliers Motorcycle Club, and there's an in-house gear shop, COK, for anything you forgot to pack. Open around the clock, it draws a mixed bear-and-leather crowd that runs from neighborhood regulars to Decadence-weekend visitors, and it stays defiantly itself: less polished than the Bourbon Street clubs and proud of it. For travelers looking for the leather end of gay New Orleans rather than the dance-floor end, this is the anchor—and during Southern Decadence its block party is one of the weekend's fixtures.
