Two-floor East London gay pub with drag on the lower floor
The Queen Adelaide is a two-floor gay pub in Bethnal Green, near Cambridge Heath Overground. It opened in December 2015 as the successor to the George & Dragon — the foundational East London gay venue that owner Richard Battye ran on Hackney Road for over a decade before the landlord ended the lease. Staff, regulars, and the signature decor (life-size figures, paintings, an animatronic horse's head) all transferred to the new space. Upstairs is a proper pub with draught beer and spirits. The basement — a former lapdancing club with original mirrored walls — runs as a dance floor Thursday through Saturday, hosting everything from R&B nights to French pop parties. Drag is baked into the DNA: Battye performs as Richardette with the LipSinkers troupe, and the lost-property closet is reportedly stuffed with discarded wigs.
