Part of the Gay Mexico City Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Mexico City, State of Mexico
1990s department-store gay bar on Calle Cuba, drag shows Thu–Sat
Soberbia is a gay nightclub on República de Cuba in Mexico City's Centro Histórico, from the team behind La Purísima a couple of doors down the same strip. The interior is built as a send-up of the Mexican department store Suburbia — a 1970s-inflected, Kubrick-tinged space designed by artist Fabián Chairez, with mannequins styled as pop icons, glass display cases, pop-art and erotic installations throughout, and the bathrooms turned into a design feature of their own. The music is eclectic, swinging from indie and pop to salsa, cumbia and perreo. República de Cuba has become downtown's gay bar corridor — La Purísima, Marrakech, Pecado, and El Buen Tiempo are all within a block — and Soberbia is one of the rooms longtime Mexico City gays actually keep coming back to, more for the crowd and the dancing than for spectacle. Drag and DJ sets fill the weekend nights; it runs Thursday through Saturday, with Thursday the easygoing early option before the strip fills up.
