Houston, Texas
A massive Montrose dance club under a rotating crystal chandelier.
South Beach is the big-room dance club of Houston's Montrose gayborhood, anchoring Pacific Street a few doors from JR's. The building has been gay nightlife ground since 1985, when it opened as Club Heaven; after a 1997 fire, owner Charles Armstrong — the longtime Montrose bar operator who bought the property from Frank Caven in 1986 — rebuilt it and opened South Beach in 2001. It went dark in 2018 and came back in 2022 following a multi-year, top-to-bottom renovation. The main room is built for a crowd: a multi-level dance floor under a rotating quartz-crystal chandelier, two full bars with go-go dancers, a video lounge, and a large outdoor patio for when you need air. Music leans high-energy electronica and hip-hop, and the club runs Wednesday through Sunday. This is where a Montrose night goes late rather than where it starts — best for travelers who want a proper dance floor, not a quiet pint.
