Salt Lake City, Utah
Utah's first unionized bar, a 1970s LGBTQ+ landmark with a big patio
The SunTrapp traces its roots to the 1970s and remains a landmark in Utah's queer history. After reopening under new owner Mary Peterson in 2024, it made statewide news again in late 2025 when its staff organized SunTrapp Workers United, making it Utah's first and only unionized bar. The dive sits on South 600 West with a big outdoor patio, working as both a daytime neighborhood anchor and a weekend nightlife destination. DJs take over on Friday and Saturday nights, and the third Saturday of each month brings 'Melanin Rouge,' a showcase dedicated to drag performers of color. It's an unfussy, community-rooted room with real history behind it, the kind of bar locals are protective of, and an easy recommendation if you want the institution rather than the newest thing.
