Salt Lake City, Utah
Queer-owned bookstore specializing in LGBTQ+ and marginalized voices
Under the Umbrella is a queer bookstore and café in Salt Lake City, founded by Kaitlyn Mahoney in 2021, Utah's only queer-specific bookstore and one of just a handful in the country. Everything on the shelves is queer in some way: written by LGBTQ+ authors, centered on LGBTQIA+ characters, or telling its story through a queer lens, with a deliberate focus on Black, trans, and disabled voices. It was built as an alternative to bar-based queer spaces, somewhere accessible to youth and to sober folks, and it functions as a community hub as much as a shop. A café was added in 2023, and the calendar runs book clubs, poetry and author nights, craft groups, and workshops that range from bookmark-making to Know Your Rights legal trainings. Worth a stop whether you're hunting for a specific title or just want a queer space that isn't centered on a night out.
