Part of the Gay London Guide — bars, events & things to do.

London, London
Soho gay bar since 1992, built around a heated cobblestone courtyard.
The Yard has been a fixture of Soho's gay scene since 1992, opened by Gordon Lewis on the former site of Condomania at 57 Rupert Street. Its signature feature is a cobbled, heated courtyard entered through an archway — one of the few outdoor drinking spaces in central Soho — with a balconied loft bar on the upper floor overlooking it. The venue helped define the modern Soho gay scene, moving away from the blacked-out-window pub format of earlier London gay bars. In 2016 the Planning Inspectorate ruled to protect the courtyard site from redevelopment. The crowd leans local and mature, with a relaxed neighborhood-bar atmosphere rather than a club one. Open daily from mid-afternoon, with Ku Bar and Rupert Street steps away, it's a dependable anchor for an early-evening Soho drink.
