Seattle, Washington
Union opened in 2018 as something Capitol Hill's gay bar scene didn't quite have: a relaxed, food-forward cocktail lounge where you could actually have a conversation, linger over dinner, and not feel like you needed to dress for a club. The project came from three longtime gay nightlife veterans — Nathan Benedict, Mark Engelmann, and Steve Nyman — whose combined history includes some of the Hill's most beloved bars of earlier eras. The name says it all: a union of their collective experience, and a gathering point for the community that's been their home for decades. The space delivers a year-round patio with heaters and an outdoor fireplace, a cozy fireside lounge inside, and a full kitchen turning out burgers, flatbread pizzas, baked brie, and more — real bar food worth ordering. The programming is no-cover, which keeps things accessible: Team Tuesday for LGBTQ+ sports teams, Wing Wednesdays, Sunday Funday brunch running from noon to close, and rotating viewing parties and community events throughout the year. It's the kind of place that fills the gap between the dive bar on one end and the dance club on the other, and does it without ever feeling like it's trying too hard.
