Nonprofit queer café, bookstore, and community space in Omaha's Old Market
Urban Abbey is a nonprofit hybrid in Omaha's Old Market district, part fair-trade coffee shop, part independent bookstore, part progressive United Methodist church, all in one storefront. Founded in 2011 by Rev. Debra McKnight, it's an openly affirming congregation that welcomes LGBTQ+ people and a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network, the United Methodist Church's affirming network. The coffee bar gives 10% of its sales to local nonprofits, and the shelves lining the room carry social-justice and LGBTQ+ titles alongside the bestsellers. The queer welcome here is active, not incidental: it runs QueerFaith on Campus, a ministry helping LGBTQ+ college students reconcile faith and identity, and it's listed in the Heartland Pride community directory. For a traveler it's a calm, affirming spot for coffee and a browse rather than a nightlife stop, a different register from the bars and an easy one to recommend.
