Two-level gay sports bar in the old Eagle Houston space
Varsity Bar is a sports-themed gay bar on Hyde Park Boulevard in Montrose, Houston, in the two-level building that was Eagle Houston until it closed in July 2025. Owner Jeff Harmon, who runs other LGBTQ+ bars in Houston, opened it in fall 2025 to keep the address an LGBTQ+ bar, and he wants it to be a home base for the city's LGBTQ+ sports leagues. Both floors were refreshed with shaded outdoor areas, and upstairs keeps a piece of the building's past: a recreation of Scott Swoveland's 1997 Mary's Bar mural of Houston's gay nightlife. Expect game-day viewing parties, DJs and live entertainment, with two dance floors on busy nights.
