Neighborhoods·Houston Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in Houston?

Houston's primary LGBTQ+ neighborhood is Montrose, centered along Montrose Boulevard and Westheimer Road in the Inner Loop, southwest of downtown. Known as the city's gayborhood since the 1970s, Montrose remains the cultural and social hub for Houston's LGBTQ+ community.

What to Find in Montrose

Montrose is home to Houston's highest concentration of LGBTQ+ bars, restaurants, and community spaces. Key venues include JR's Bar & Grill on Pacific Street, Rich's Houston (the city's iconic gay dance club since 1983), South Beach Houston (a large nightclub complex), and Crocker (a laid-back dive bar). The area along Pacific Street, Fairview Street, and San Jacinto Street forms the main nightlife corridor.

Community Landmarks

The Montrose Center is the neighborhood's anchor community organization, offering health services, youth programs, and support groups. Legacy Community Health provides LGBTQ+-focused healthcare. You'll also find LGBTQ+ murals along Westheimer and a mix of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants throughout the neighborhood.

Beyond Montrose

While Montrose is the historic center, Houston's LGBTQ+ community has spread across the city due to gentrification. The Heights and Midtown are popular LGBTQ+-friendly residential areas, and Neon Boots Dancehall and Saloon — Houston's LGBTQ+ country-western dance hall — is located northwest of downtown on Hempstead Road.
