What is the Gay Neighborhood in Sacramento?
Sacramento's primary LGBTQ+ neighborhood is Lavender Heights, a section of Midtown centered at the intersection of 20th and K Streets — marked by a rainbow crosswalk. The name has been in informal use since the mid-1970s and was officially recognized in 2015.
What to Find in Lavender Heights
Lavender Heights runs roughly from 19th to 23rd Streets between I Street and Capitol Avenue. The district is home to Sacramento's highest concentration of LGBTQ+-owned bars, restaurants, and shops. Landmark venues include Faces Nightclub (a 37-year Sacramento institution), Badlands Sacramento (a multi-level dance club), The Mercantile Saloon, and Roscoe's Bar & Burgers.
Community Resources
The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is the largest LGBTQ+ organization in Northern California, serving over 20,000 visitors annually with health services, youth programs, and community events. The Lavender Library houses one of the largest LGBTQ+ archives on the West Coast, with a lending library, reading room, and regular community programming.
