The Tenderloin's last queer bar and home of the Hot Boxxx Girls.
Aunt Charlie's Lounge is the last queer bar standing in San Francisco's Tenderloin, open since 1987 at 133 Turk Street — directly across from the site of the 1966 Compton's Cafeteria uprising, one of the earliest documented LGBTQ+ rights protests in the country. It is cash only, with a small cover for the drag shows. The Hot Boxxx Girls are the draw: a Friday- and Saturday-night old-school drag revue widely called the longest-running drag show in the city. The rest of the calendar keeps the place busy with the Dream Queens Revue on select Wednesdays, the Angels drag-and-dance party on the second Tuesday, and Bus Station John's beloved Tubesteak Connection vinyl night on the last Thursday. Bar manager Joe Mattheisen has kept the lights on since 1997, and the room — tiny, glittered, and unpretentious — feels like a direct line to a San Francisco that developers keep trying to erase. Worth crossing town for if you want the real thing rather than a polished revival.
