Queer-owned, plant-filled cocktail lounge on NE MLK, since 2023.
Back2Earth is a queer-owned cocktail lounge on NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Portland's King neighborhood, opened in 2023 by Dan Henderson in the space that was long home to gay bar Local Lounge. It leans design-forward and cosmic, with a living wall of some 200 plants, custom LED lighting, lounge seating, and a space-travel theme that runs down to the rainbow-astronaut logo. This is a craft-cocktail lounge built for conversation, not a thumping nightclub. The bar pairs a real cocktail program with small plates and snacks, and the calendar rotates through drag shows, karaoke, trivia, open mics, local DJ sets, and 'Gamer Nights' where video games get projected on the wall. For a traveler it's the easygoing, mixed, friendly anchor to start a night on the east side, softer and more loungey than Portland's downtown dance bars.
