Baker Beach is the mile-long sand below the Presidio's serpentine cliffs, in the park's southwest corner by the 25th Avenue Gate, with the Golden Gate Bridge in view the whole way. The National Park Service says it plainly: the north end, the stretch nearest the bridge, is where people are traditionally under-dressed and nude — and that is where the gay crowd sits. It is not a swimming beach. The NPS warns of large waves, undertow and rip currents, and the water is cold. Restrooms and a picnic area with tables and grills sit in the cypress grove at the east end of the parking lot; dogs are allowed; parking fills on sunny weekends. Hikers can pick up the Coastal Trail from the cliffside. Pick a sunny weekday if you can.
