Part of the Gay Fire Island Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Fire Island, New York
Men-only bayfront guesthouse in a Venetian-style palace since 1957.
Founded in 1957 by Broadway set designer John Eberhardt, the Belvedere is a men-only gay guesthouse in Cherry Grove, built and added to over decades as a Venetian-style fantasy of terraces, domes, towers, and fountains on a half-acre of Great South Bay waterfront. Eberhardt constructed it incrementally and filled the grounds with statuary, gargoyles, and chandeliers collected on his travels; it stayed in the Eberhardt family for nearly 70 years before being listed for sale in 2025, so it is worth confirming current ownership and operating status before you book. Set on the bay with a pool, hot tub, rooftop terrace, and gardens, it is one of the oldest continuously operating gay guesthouses in the country and a Fire Island landmark in its own right. Rooms range from simple shared-bath economy options to suites with private decks, drawing a mix of longtime regulars and first-time visitors who come as much for the architecture as for the stay.
