Kansas City, Missouri
French-inspired gay bistro in KC's Westport district, open since 2003
Bistro 303 is a French-inspired gay bar and bistro in Kansas City's Westport district, open since 2003. By its own telling it was the first local gay bar to put windows on the street — a small but pointed statement of visibility at a time when that wasn't the norm. The room doubles as a gallery, with a rotating collection of original work from local artists. The kitchen, led by chef Paul Mullins, is a real part of the draw rather than an afterthought: the weekend brunch (the crab cakes Benedict has a following) and signature cocktails pull a loyal crowd, and Thursday karaoke keeps it social. An intimate back patio adds warm-weather seating. It's the more grown-up, sit-down end of the Westport-area scene — date night or a long brunch rather than a dance floor.
