St. Paul, Minnesota
Queer soccer-and-sports bar on University Avenue in St. Paul.
The Black Hart of Saint Paul is a queer soccer bar on University Avenue, a few hundred yards from Allianz Field where Minnesota United plays. It opened in 2018 in the former Town House space, carrying forward that room's decades-long run as one of St. Paul's anchor LGBTQ+ bars, and reframed it around the beautiful game: matches from leagues around the world play across the screens, and big games draw raucous watch parties. It's more than a sports bar, though. The calendar makes room for drag, burlesque, bingo, and karaoke, and the crowd skews younger and mixed, soccer supporters and queer regulars sharing the same floor. There's a free parking lot, a rarity in the Midway, which makes it an easy pull from either downtown. If you want a night that swings between a goal celebration and a drag number, this is the only place in the Twin Cities built for both.
