About Blackstone's

Blackstone's has been Portland, Maine's gay bar since 1987, for long stretches the only one in the state's biggest city, and a survivor of vandalism, a pandemic shutdown, and decades of changing nightlife. It sits on a quiet corner of Pine Street in the West End, a low-key neighborhood bar with a wood-and-leather feel and a pool table that's been a fixture for years. The draw is the opposite of a mega-club: stiff drinks, regulars who know each other, and a steady weekly rhythm of 'Char-aoke' on Sunday nights, pool tournaments, and trivia hosted by local drag queens. The bar has changed hands a couple of times since the late '80s, but the room's role hasn't, and for travelers it's the obvious, welcoming first stop to find Portland's gay community gathered in one place.
