Key West, Florida
Historic outdoor restaurant in Bahama Village with Hemingway lore
Blue Heaven is an outdoor restaurant in Bahama Village with more than a century of history layered into its walls. The building has been a spirits store, a cockfighting pit, a boxing ring where Hemingway refereed matches in the 1930s, a billiard hall, and a bordello — the original slate pool-table tops are still underfoot as courtyard pavers, and upstairs you can spot the peepholes from the bordello era. Free-roaming roosters weave between painted picnic tables under a tropical canopy while you eat banana pancakes (served until noon), lobster eggs Benedict, or jerk chicken. The mile-high key lime pie — baked meringue piled absurdly tall — is widely considered the best on the island. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; expect a wait at brunch.
