Part of the Gay San Diego Guide — bars, events & things to do.

San Diego, California
Cozy University Heights neighborhood gay bar.
Cheers is the kind of neighborhood gay bar that's outlasted most of the city's flashier rooms — open on Adams Avenue in University Heights since 1982, under its current owner since the mid-90s. It's a no-frills local: free pool, a jukebox, strong cheap drinks, and bartenders who learn your name fast. There's no dance floor and no attitude, which is the point. Regulars come for karaoke and trivia nights, and the Sunday tradition of free burgers and hot dogs off the grill in the afternoon. A few blocks east of the Hillcrest crush, it's where you go when you want a real conversation and a barstool rather than a scene — a genuine local's bar that welcomes a newcomer like a regular.
