Honolulu, Hawaii
Local gay-friendly dive bar on McCully Street outside Waikiki
Chiko's Tavern is a local gay-friendly dive on McCully Street, set back from the Waikiki resort strip in a residential pocket of Honolulu, the kind of neighborhood bar where the staff and regulars trade first names. The draw is unpretentious: cheap drinks, pool, darts, and karaoke, with pupus (Hawaiian bar snacks) to keep the night going and the occasional live act. The crowd is mostly local and genuinely mixed in age and background, which is the point, more a 'cheers' spot than a scene, and a useful counterweight to the tourist-heavy bars closer to the beach. Worth the short trip out of Waikiki if you'd rather sing badly among locals than be seen.
