Cincinnati, Ohio
Queer-owned art studio, retail shop, and speakeasy in Covington, KY.
Creative House of Art & Design — CHAD, an acronym built from founder Chad Turner's first name — is part art studio, part retail shop, and part hidden speakeasy in Mainstrasse Village, Covington, Kentucky. Turner, a former K-12 teacher, opened the space in 2020 with his husband Chuck Beatty, who also founded OutReels Cincinnati, the region's LGBTQ+ film festival. Up front, the mercantile stocks laser-cut jewelry, artisanal soaps, and locally made goods. In back, a cocktail bar operates speakeasy-style — promoted mainly by a sidewalk chalkboard and word of mouth. Classes run from kids' anime drawing to adult watercolor, and the signature Drink, Draw & Drag nights combine paint sessions with drag performance. CHAD won the Northern Kentucky Pride Center's LGBTQ+ Inclusive Business Award in 2021.
