Part of the Gay Barcelona Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Barcelona, Barcelona
Century-old gay dive bar and cabaret in El Raval with Fri/Sat drag shows.
El Cangrejo is a gay cabaret dive in El Raval with well over a century behind it. The bar traces its roots to the early 1900s, when this was the old Barrio Chino, and Federico Garcia Lorca is said to have stopped in during the 1930s while staging his work in the city. Photos of Carmen de Mairena, the legendary Spanish trans cabaret performer who reigned here before television fame, still hang on the walls. Weekend drag shows are the draw: lip-sync and broad comedy late on Friday and Saturday nights, performed to Spanish pop divas, with DJs and singalongs carrying on after. This is rough-edged old Raval cabaret, not Gaixample polish, and the room fills with beardy Catalans who know every word plus tourists who wander in after midnight. Thursday is a quieter regular night if you want the room before the crush.
