El Convento Rico has anchored Toronto's Latin American queer scene from a storefront on College Street in Little Italy since 1992, part Latin nightclub, part gay bar, and a space built specifically for the city's Latin American 2SLGBTQ+ community. It's best known for its weekend drag shows, performed without a stage, with queens working their way straight through the packed crowd, and over the years it has also become home to one of Toronto's longest-running drag king nights. The music splits between Latin rhythms and top 40, and the floor stays full into the early hours with a diverse, heavily BIPOC crowd that has kept coming back for more than three decades. The lines down that stretch of College on a Saturday night are part of the experience. For a visitor, it's a genuinely distinct night out, neither a Village bar nor a generic club, and worth the trip west for anyone who wants the city's Latin queer nightlife at its source.
