Woody's is a Church-Wellesley Village landmark, open since 1989 and one of the busiest gay bars in Toronto. Multiple bars, a dance floor, and a steady lineup of drag keep it moving, but it's best known for the long-running amateur contests, Best Chest, Best Legs, and the like, that have become Village institutions in their own right. Its connected sibling SAILOR, a nautical-themed room opened in 1994 next door and joined from the inside, brings a slightly more laid-back counterpart under the same roof. The bar earned a wider profile when the US version of Queer as Folk modelled its fictional pub on it in the early 2000s, and it's drawn tourists and locals ever since. Together Woody's and Sailor are one of the anchors of Toronto gay nightlife, reliably packed on weekends and a near-mandatory stop on any night out in the Village. From the first night open, the bars tied fundraising into the room, a community streak that's run alongside the dancing for decades.
