Part of the Gay New Orleans Guide — bars, events & things to do.

New Orleans, Louisiana
The South's first gay and lesbian bookstore, on Frenchmen Street since 1978
Frenchmen Art & Books has been a fixture of New Orleans' LGBTQ+ community since 1978, when Tom Horner — a former Episcopal priest who had just come out — opened it as the first gay and lesbian bookstore in the South. Nearly five decades later, the shop still anchors the corner of Frenchmen and Chartres in the Faubourg Marigny. The current selection mixes new and used books with a strong LGBTQ+ literature section, local art covering the walls, and small gifts. Current owner David Zalkind took over in 2018, continuing the tradition set by longtime steward Otis Fennell, who became known as the 'Mayor of Frenchmen Street.' It's a living piece of queer New Orleans history.
