Gaels Public House & Sports is a queer sports bar on Troost Avenue, between the Plaza and Brookside, set in a century-old building that's been a neighborhood tavern in one form or another for generations. Three bars and 26 TVs make it the place to watch Chiefs, Royals, and college games in good company, and the kitchen turns out a well-regarded run of Northern European pub fare — the pizzas and nachos get singled out. Kansas City Magazine has named it both Best Sports Bar and Best LGBTQ+ Bar. It also takes the community part seriously: Gaels was the first Kansas City restaurant designated a 'Safe Place' for youth in crisis, and it's been honored by the Mid-America LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce. Beyond game days the calendar runs to karaoke, trivia, drag brunches, and live entertainment — a sports bar that earned its standing in the community rather than just hanging a flag.
