Provincetown, Massachusetts
Gay-owned 1858 inn and entertainment complex on Carver Street.
Gifford House is a gay-owned inn on Carver Street and one of Provincetown's oldest surviving hotels, a landmark on the spot since 1858. Beyond lodging, it works as a multi-room entertainment complex and year-round cultural hub, rare in a town where much of the scene shuts down after summer. Under one roof it houses Club Purgatory, the basement nightclub long counted among America's earliest leather bars; the Porch Bar, a relaxed second-floor lounge with a wraparound porch, fireplace, and pool table; and the Wilde Playhouse, a theatrical event and performance space, with live entertainment running through the summer. Rooms are en-suite and walkable to the center of Commercial Street. For travelers who want to stay inside the scene rather than commute to it, Gifford House puts the bed and the night under the same roof.
