Part of the Gay New York City Guide — bars, events & things to do.
New York City, New York
Chelsea's revived gay bar in its original 1996 horse-stable space.
Originally opened in 1996 in a converted horse stable on West 19th Street, G Lounge was one of Chelsea’s defining gay bars for two decades before closing in 2016. It relaunched in 2025 under original founder Michael McGrail, keeping the signature arched entryway, street-facing window, and oval bar that made the space iconic. The new version adds a dedicated dance floor and upgraded sound system while expanding the programming calendar well beyond nightlife — Monday drawing classes, jazz nights, midweek drag competitions, and weekend DJ sets running into the early morning. There’s also a full mocktail program and trans/nonbinary-dedicated nights built into the weekly rotation. The crowd ranges from Chelsea locals who remember the original to a younger generation discovering it fresh.
