#1 World's 50 Best Bars 2024 — reservation-only speakeasy on Amberes
Handshake Speakeasy ranked #1 on The World's 50 Best Bars list in 2024 — the first Mexican bar and first outside the US or Europe to take the top spot. The entrance is behind a door marked only with the number 13 inside the NH Hotel on Calle Amberes, at the edge of Zona Rosa. Reservations are required (90-minute table sessions), and the 16-cocktail menu changes regularly, with drinks prepared 24 to 48 hours in advance using rotovapors and culinary lab techniques. Co-founded in 2019 by Rodrigo Urraca and Mark Di Battista, the bar hit its stride when Dutch bartender Eric van Beek — 2018 Bacardi Legacy Global Winner — joined as partner and drinks director. Two floors: a Gatsby-inspired ground level with dark marble and a 1990s soundtrack, and a basement with hip-hop and Japanese izakaya styling. Smart casual dress code enforced.
