Part of the Gay Long Beach Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Long Beach, California
Downtown park named for Harvey Milk, with an Equality Plaza for local LGBTQ+ leaders
Harvey Milk Promenade Park is a small downtown public park at the end of The Promenade near 3rd Street, and it was the first park in the nation named for gay civil rights leader Harvey Milk. The local LGBT community broke ground on the site in May 2012, and a historical marker followed in 2013. Its centerpiece is Equality Plaza, which honors local LGBT leaders and their role in the gay civil rights movement, with new names added over the years. The park also preserves a 1938 WPA mosaic mural, "Long Beach Recreation," alongside seating, chess tables, and California native plantings. For anyone walking downtown Long Beach, it's a short, meaningful stop that anchors the city's queer history a few blocks from the waterfront.
