Paris, Paris
Pigalle drag cabaret since 1946, with shows at 9pm and 11pm Thu–Sat.
A drag and cabaret institution in Pigalle, on Rue des Martyrs, billed as France's first gender-bending cabaret. Madame Arthur opened in 1946, taking its name from a 19th-century French song, and built its reputation on a distinctly Parisian formula: drag performers reinventing chanson française rather than the lip-synced pop revues found elsewhere. The room sits within a building with deep entertainment history, and in 2015 it was joined with the adjacent Le Divan du Monde to form a single cabaret and club. Nights here run from staged cabaret performance into late club hours, with a crowd that mixes the queer faithful, in-the-know locals, and visitors after something more idiosyncratic than a big tourist cabaret. It's a worthwhile detour out of the Marais for travelers who want to see the older, theatrical side of queer Paris, equal parts living history and ongoing party.
