Kitsch-retro cabaret and gallery in Centro Histórico — drag shows from midnight.
Marrakech Salon — "El Marra" to regulars — is a kitsch-retro cabaret and gallery on República de Cuba in Mexico City's Centro Histórico. Despite the name, the decor is purely Mexican camp: burlesque marquee signage, vintage photographs documenting gay history in Mexico, and projected 1960s lucha libre B-movies on the walls. A neon sign at the exit reads "Gracias por su preferencia... sexual." Drag and cabaret shows start around midnight, featuring performers channeling legendary Mexican "Dirty Divas" like La Tesorito and Daniela Romo. The bar counter doubles as a performance stage. Music jumps from Juan Gabriel to Madonna to reggaeton with no logic to the transitions. Signature cocktails include the Chichifo (chocolate liqueur) and Mayate (mint liqueur) — both named in Mexican gay slang. Open since 2007, Marrakech is credited with turning Calle Cuba into the alternative gay nightlife corridor that pulled the scene away from Zona Rosa. Thursday through Saturday, opens around 6pm.
