UNAM art museum hosting Mexico's longest-running queer cultural festival
A UNAM university museum in Santa María la Ribera that has hosted the Festival Internacional por la Diversidad Sexual (FIDS) since 1987 — the longest-running LGBTQ+ cultural festival in Latin America. During the 1980s and 90s, when police targeted LGBTQ+ gatherings elsewhere in Mexico City, the museum's institutional autonomy made it one of the only safe spaces for public queer discourse. Year-round programming includes queer-focused exhibitions, film, and performance alongside broader contemporary art. The adjacent Chopo tianguis (weekly street market) is a fixture of CDMX's alternative and queer subculture.
