Houston, Texas
An AIDS Healthcare Foundation thrift store on Montrose's Westheimer.
Out of the Closet is an AIDS Healthcare Foundation thrift store on Westheimer Road in Montrose, Houston's LGBTQ+ cultural hub. It opened in 2019, and like the rest of the AHF chain it pairs secondhand shopping — clothing, accessories, books, and home goods — with a direct public-health mission: 96 cents of every dollar funds AHF's HIV/AIDS care and prevention programs. It's more than a resale shop. A full-service AHF pharmacy operates on-site alongside free, fast HIV and STI testing, and the building's exterior carries the Montrose Paint Wall, a large outdoor mural that's become a neighborhood photo stop. AHF opened here citing Houston's disproportionately high HIV rates, and the store doubles as a low-barrier point of access for testing and care in the middle of the gayborhood.
