Punto BCN is one of Barcelona’s oldest gay bars, open on Carrer de Muntaner since March 1990 and the original venue that grew into the Grupo Arena nightlife group. It was the first openly gay bar in the Gayxample, back when most nearby spots were dark and discreet. It’s a big, straightforward space with a long bar, a mezzanine of tables and chairs, and a pool table, and it has stayed a fixture of the Eixample gayborhood for over three decades by being reliable rather than trendy. Music runs to Spanish pop and dance, with the volume rising as the evening goes on. More meeting point than club, it’s the classic first stop of a night out in the Gayxample: an easy place to get a drink, find your bearings and figure out where the crowd is heading before the larger dance venues peak after midnight. The mix is broad, locals and visitors of all ages, and the early-evening hours make it as good for a casual afterwork drink as for a pre-club warm-up. If you only have time for one old-school Barcelona gay bar, this is the one with the history.
