Rainbow Road, formally titled 'The Long Walk to Equality,' is billed as the world's longest permanent rainbow-painted road: a 600-metre stretch of Beach Road at Hanlan's Point on the Toronto Islands. Queer artist Travis Myers designed it, and Mayor Olivia Chow unveiled it in May 2024. The painted path runs the six Pride-flag colors with progress chevrons at both ends honoring trans communities, Black and Brown communities, and those lost to HIV/AIDS. The setting is the point. Hanlan's Point hosted Canada's first major Pride gathering in 1971 and has been a queer beach landmark for far longer, which makes the road as much a memorial as a photo stop. It's reachable only by city ferry from the downtown waterfront, and the island is car-free, so it's a walk or bike ride worth planning a half-day around. Pair it with the clothing-optional beach nearby for a full afternoon.
