Mexico City, State of Mexico
Mexico's first LGBTQ+ refuge for those fleeing violence, since 2020
Mexico's first shelter designed specifically for LGBTQ+ people fleeing persecution — Central American asylum seekers, Mexican youth thrown out for being gay or trans, sex workers escaping violence — opened in May 2020 in the early weeks of the pandemic by activist Raúl Caporal and ally Lucía Riojas. From the original Cuauhtémoc location it has shifted address several times for safety, and currently operates out of Ciudad de los Deportes alongside sister shelters in Tapachula and Monterrey. Beyond a bed and three meals, residents get legal accompaniment for asylum claims, psychological care, HIV/STI navigation, and job-placement help. Casa Frida is also where a lot of the city's LGBTQ+ cultural work and resistance lives — resident-led art, theater and drag-makeup workshops, plus art and merch sales that fund the project, since it takes no government money. It has been hit hard by the January 2025 US funding cuts, so donations and volunteer hours matter more right now than they ever have.
