Part of the Gay Palm Springs Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Palm Springs, California
The first gay bar in Palm Springs, open since 1991, on Arenas Road
Streetbar opened on Arenas Road in 1991 as Streetbar Named Desire, a nod to Tennessee Williams, and is credited as the first gay bar in Palm Springs. The bars, restaurants and shops that grew up around it became the Arenas District, the city-designated gay neighborhood it still anchors. Now past its 35th year, it has kept the cozy, unpretentious feel of a true neighborhood bar rather than chasing the dance-club crowd. It's a talking-and-people-watching bar at heart, with strong pours, friendly bartenders, and an open front that spills onto the busiest stretch of the strip, plus karaoke nights for the brave. The bar has rotated work from more than fifty local artists on its walls and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for AIDS and community charities over the decades. For the history and the easy welcome, it's worth starting a night here.
