Part of the Gay Dallas Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Dallas, Texas
Texas's oldest lesbian bar, on the Cedar Springs strip.
Sue Ellen's is Texas's oldest lesbian bar, open since January 1989 and named — by its Caven Enterprises owners — for the Dallas soap-opera character. Since 2008 it has held a two-level home on Throckmorton just off Cedar Springs, with multiple bars, a patio, and a stage that books live bands and DJs through the week. It remains the anchor of queer women's nightlife in Dallas, and one of a shrinking number of lesbian bars left anywhere in the country. The crowd is women-centered but the welcome is broad, and weekends move from live music early to dancing late. For a traveler, it is worth crossing town for: not a themed night tucked inside a gay men's club, but a standalone lesbian bar with more than three decades of history and the patio scene to match. Start a night here and the rest of the strip is steps away.
