Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
Long Beach's lesbian-leaning dive since 1981, with pool and stiff pours.
Sweetwater Saloon is a lesbian-leaning queer bar on East Broadway in Long Beach's Alamitos Beach neighborhood, open since 1981 under three generations of the Tedesco family, who named it for a condo at their favorite ski resort and ran the nearby Broadway Bar before it. The setup is classic dive: horseshoe bar, two pool tables, jukebox, leather booths, and heavy pours. Cash only. Of the LGBTQ+ bars on the Broadway corridor, Sweetwater draws the most women-centered crowd, though it is open and welcoming to everyone. It is regulars-heavy, the kind of place where bartenders know names, and the vibe is closer to your neighborhood local than a club. Decades in, it stands as one of the longest-running queer bars in the Long Beach corridor.
